CUSE Webinar 2020 - 2 - 14 October 2020

Recent developments in the environmental performance assessment of the circular economy within the built environment

Speaker: Prof. Morten Birkved

Circular Economy (CE) can help reduce the building industry's immense environmental impact. Life cycle assessment (LCA) can facilitate decision-making in relation to CE by quantifying and identifying the largest environmental impact reduction opportunities throughout a building's life cycle, as well as identify environmental impact reduction opportunities contained within CE models. Thus, aggregated LCA knowledge is needed for objective environmental evaluation of CE. In this presentation using case studies, it will be explored what the environmental impact reduction potentials of CE actually are and if by following the contemporary environmental performance assessment paradigm CE might also turn to hold disadvantages in terms of impacts on the environmental and human health.

About the Speaker

Morten Birkved is a professor at the Life Cycle Engineering Center at the University of Southern Denmark. With an environmental chemistry background, Morten has over the last 25 years contributed to the method development of quantitative environmental performance assessment of products, systems and services. Over the years Morten has been deeply involved in providing decision support for the circular economic innovation process in Europe and has via his research and industrial collaborations contributed considerably to the rapidly increasing pool of scientific literature on environmental performance assessment of circular economy within the built environment.
