Thesis Titile:Experiencing the cities: Understanding linkages between people and quality of surroundings

Deepank Verma is a Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for Urban Science and Engineering (CUSE), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. His research topic deals with the quantification of Perception and Preferences towards urban surroundings through Machine Learning Techniques. He completed his Master’s degree in City Planning from IIT Kharagpur (2016). He is an Urban Planner by training.

His doctoral research titled “Evaluation of human perception of urban surroundings from visual and auditory datasets” explores the techniques to collect and analyze multimodal datasets with the state of the art Machine Learning Tools. As a part of this research, Street View images and the Binaural audio is collected from the survey areas at different time intervals which helped in gathering insights into the dynamic characteristics of the urban areas.  With the Deep Learning methods such as Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Networks, the attributes of visual and auditory datasets are extracted and correlated with the responses given by the people regarding the perception of safety, liveliness, and boredom in the street scenes.

His research articles have been published and are under review process in peer-reviewed international journals. His work has also been selected to be presented at various upcoming international conferences.
