Thesis Titile:Quantitative Approaches for Spatial Planning of Urban Coastal Regions


Ravinder Dhiman is a full-time doctoral research scholar at the Centre for Urban Science and Engineering (CUSE), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India. His research focuses on developing quantitative approaches for classification of urban coastal areas to improve  the rationalization of prevailing Coastal Regulations Zone (CRZ) notifications.  Key motivation of his research is to provide a decision support tool for urban local bodies to improve the decision making process for classification of urban coastal areas.  Recently, he developed a Coastal Area Index (CAI) for Mumbai City based on GIS coupled Multiple Criteria Decision making approach to synergize the anthropogenic development and natural coastal ecosystem.

Before this role, he worked for two years as senior project fellow at Physical Oceanography Division, CSIR - National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa, India.

He is an engineering graduate and holds a Masters’ degree in Energy and Environmental Management. His research interests include coastal regulations, integrated coastal management, decision support  systems, geospatial techniques and decision science for environmental management.

Ravinder has published research articles in peer reviewed international journals like Habitat International, Applied Water Science, Environmental Earth Sciences. He has project experience in the areas of watershed management, shoreline change analysis and coastal processes.
