Thesis Titile:Assessment of impact of urban metro rail on the housing choice and land-use changes

Karan Barpete is a Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for Urban Science and Engineering (CUSE), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. His doctoral research tries to find the impact of urban metro rail on housing choices and land use changes. He has a Masters degree in City Planning from IIT Kharagpur (2014) and is an Architect by training.

His doctoral research entitled ‘Impact of Urban Metro Rail on Housing Choices: Case Study of Mumbai’ highlights the influence accessibility has on the housing choices in the city of Mumbai. Mumbai has metro rail projects in different stages of completion and operation, which makes this city an ideal ground for studying how metro projects inflate land prices in their vicinity. A survey of 1000 households near operational, under construction and proposed metro stations was done for this study. The distance to metro stations is classified into categories of walkability. The travel behaviour of residents is noted and compared with their previous residences. The findings reveal where people live and why, in comparison to where they want to live and why. Residential location choice is observed using structural equation models.
