Ronak Sutaria is a Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for Urban Science and Engineering (CUSE), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. His doctoral research topic deals with improving data granularity using real-time low-power sensor-based monitoring for urban policy research. He is part of a 5-year DST-Intel funded project, administered by IUSSTF, for Real-time Air Quality Monitoring - SATVAM (Streaming Analytics using Temporal Variables for Air quality Monitoring). He has a Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science degrees in Computer Science.

His doctoral research aims to explore the data gaps in the governance policies related to environmental sustainability in the context of urban quality of living, starting with a focus on ambient air quality. He has been involved with real-time air quality monitoring projects since 2015 and was part of a team which launched India’s first peer-reviewed and scientifically validated Real-time PM2.5 urban air quality monitoring network. The focus there has been on the field calibrations of low-cost sensor based PM2.5 monitors with regulatory grade monitoring equipment. Different calibration techniques like univariate linear, quadratic and two-segment piecewise linear models have been evaluated.

His research interest spans urban policy research using low-powered wireless networking, spatio-temporal analytics and human-centred design principles. His work has been published in peer-reviewed international journals like Atmospheric Measurement Techniques (AMT) and IEEE-Standards Association.
