Vaibhav Kumar is a Ph.D. candidate at the Centre for Urban Science and Engineering (CUSE), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. His doctoral research topic deals with application of data driven approaches while responding to urban disasters in the context of current and future cities. He completed his Masters’ degree in Remote Sensing and GIS with specialization in Geoinformatics from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun in the year 2014.

His doctoral research entitled ‘Optimizing Use of Movable Resources While Responding to Urban Disasters: A perspective of current and conceptual cities’ focuses on developing ICT based fire management solutions using a data driven approach. The work is a combination of various methodologies like modeling fire causes and relationships to optimize the available resources, to design less fire vulnerable urban spaces and to develop ICT driven smart disaster management body for implementing the solution. A framework is developed to model the various causes and relationships of fire events with the fine-grained urban settlement variables using machine learning techniques. The contributing factors are modeled to predict spatiotemporal firefighting demand. A multi integer optimization model is implemented to identify spatiotemporal optimal locations for mini and large fire stations and the distribution of resources over them.

His research articles have been published in peer-reviewed international journals like Habitat International, Geocarto International, Quarterly International and ACM.
