Ph.D. Programme

The Centre for Urban Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching and skilled human resource development with the primary mandate of creating innovative and holistic solutions to deliver urban services related to housing, infrastructure, energy, sanitation, healthcare, etc., while mitigating the effects of natural disasters and climate change. The centre will combine the latest advances in science and technology with sustainable, equitable and human-friendly designs, to create new products and solutions that would lead to the betterment of quality of life for the rapidly increasing urban population in the developing world.


Ph.D. students will be engaged in interdisciplinary research that will focus on urban challenges. They will work with faculty and researchers from various departments and centres at IIT Bombay in the following domains, including but not limited to:

  •  Planning and Design: Housing, Land use policies, Public Spaces, Risk Management
  •  Policy and Governance: Housing Economics, Health, Education, Employment, Environment
  •  Infrastructure:Buildings,Transportation & Land use, Urban water, Waste Management, Smart Energy
  •  Informatics:Citizen Science, Cyber-Physical Systems, Urban Knowledge, Geo-Spatial Technologies


To fulfill the credit requirements, Ph.D. students will have to complete a minimum of 12 credits in two 6-credit courses and 4 credits of seminar. On a case by case basis a student may be asked to do more credits to build up the background needed to pursue the doctoral work in his/her area of interest. Students are encouraged to take at-least one course from Category A, see list below if their background is engineering and a course from Category B if their background is not primarily engineering. Category C represents other courses that may be opted for. A student is permitted to take any course in IITB subjected to approval by the Head of C-USE or the prospective guide.
